When your USB port stopped working, did you just plug your device into another one? If the machine you thought it used to be paired to is really no longer there, then it can't be interfering. None of them suggested that there was an official, documented (or even undocumented) way of doing a reset on an Apple keyboard. Now it works. When I turned Bluetooth off and back on again on the iPad and powered the keyboard off and back on, it showed up as Bluetooth Keyboard and Not Paired, just as keys as standard function keys'. But this should be fixed in an update of iOS.
It should stay on for about 5 seconds, and then start blinking. NB: This trick works especially on the original Bluetooth Wireless keyboards, mice and trackpads.
