I just removed all the spaces before and after the closing php tag and PRESTO - all is good everywhere. If you're referring to my second link, that was for peapodgrrl (as I indicated) who was looking for a way to show RSS feeds in Chrome. Turned out the plugin modified functions.php and added code, but did not strip it out when I removed.
