After starting it (and returning it to delayed auto-start), updates seem to work (KB947821 also starts fine, but there was no more reason to run it anyway). It worked for me. I should, however, be able to send round the first part of the fix tonight if I get time, as that I can do that without a disk. Unfortunately, I currently do not have a Server 2K8R2 disk to hand in order to extract a bit of necessary data off. I then get the bar scrolling across the screen and it says Downloading Updates but the counts never increase (0 KB total, 0% complete). Our old VPS running Windows 2008 "R1" was giving error code c8000266 when running Windows Update - surprisingly few references to that code come up in Google. This process of switching from the newer method to the older one and then back again seems to fix a host of registry errors and other wastes of time.  It is SFCFix will open and perform a fix.
