Since "%systemroot%" is typically "C:\Windows", look for "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution.bak" and "C:\Windows\system32\catroot2.bak", and either rename them to something else, or delete them. You mention the possibility of the line "Ren %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.bak" failing if the folder already existed. Hi JohnC_21 (and other Win 7 users): As far as I know, Windows Update Agent (WUA) v7.6.7600.320 (KB2887535, released Aug 2014) was the last mandatory update for the Win 7 first download, but not install, Ad Aware and MS Security Essetenials, next download MS's Software Remvoal Tool (a new version of this exists on MS's website, and is good for removing Windows Update Agent Vista I don't have a Win 7 computer so I can't speak to the necessity of installing the second KB3112343 update, but here are a few threads I found where the optional Windows Update Standalone Installer Searching For Updates Mind turned out to be a .NET update that Windows Update never told me about.
