This often happens when you install a third party defragmenter like Diskeeper, then on uninstalling, it does not restore the built in one correctly. I'm not totally computer literate, yet. If that didn't work then go to start => run, type fsutil dirty query c: and tell us about the result (provided you're trying to defrag the volume c). And to my surprise it now works a treat.

If You’re Running Windows 7 or 8.x If you’re using either Windows 7, 8, or even Vista, your system is already configured to run defrag on a regular basis—generally 1 AM Recently I have been reviewing Registry cleaning utilities but I don't recall not being able to run a defrag after a reg clean which is my normal routine. I also have Windows 7 on a 65GB partition on an SSD which also has my linux OS partitions. Thanks!
